Release and Update Naming Convention

This page explains the standard terminology used by Akcelerant Software to describe its software release and updates, along with the associated version number conventions.

Definitions

Release
  • Provides significant functionality
  • Comprehensive deployment - includes all components of the software
  • When installed, all missing/dependent releases will be installed
  • Released annually for all customers target first quarter
  • Accompanied by Release Notes to describe all enhancements/defects included
Update
  • Addresses minor issues or adds minor functionality (e.g. a new connector).
  • Includes all components of the software, and will apply all missing/dependent.
  • Releases/Updates.
  • Released quarterly for all customers.
  • Always rolled into the next Release/Update.
  • May also be released when necessary for specific customers.
  • Will have dependency on the last Release/Update.
  • Accompanied by a bulletin and Release Notes that describes the Update.
Critical Update
  • Addresses critical issues (e.g. stability, performance, security).
  • Released when necessary.
  • Recommended to all customers.
  • Sometimes accompanied by a bulletin or Release Notes that describes the Critical Update.
  • Otherwise, same as an Update.
Hotfix
  • A change that a Product Support Developer performs manually at a customer site.
  • Rolled into the next Release/Update.
  • May progress to a Critical Update if necessary.
  • Must be manually reapplied at the customer after any additional Updates/Releases are applied that do not include the hotfix.

Version Number Conventions

The version number for a Release, Critical Update, or Update is displayed as the following:

Release Number Typically represents the year, may not in every case

Version - 14.00.00

Friendly - 14.00

Update Number Incremental

Version - 14.01.00

Friendly - 14.01

Critical Update Incremental Number

Version/Friendly - 14.01.01

Version/Friendly - 14.01.02

Version/Friendly - 14.01.03

Every version of the Framework (Release, Update, and Critical Update) uses the format XX.XX.XX.  Above two types of the version number conventions are used.  It is required that for documentation, announcement, marketing material, ect..., that the version number convention is used.  The friendly number convention can be used during non-formal conversations.
